In this episode, Christine Corbidge works with Luna, her five-year-old Warmblood-Appaloosa cross, to test and build her confidence with obstacles that challenge what’s underfoot. Christine demonstrates how these exercises, like stepping onto hollow surfaces such as bridges, are crucial for preparing a horse for trail rides and real-world scenarios where they might encounter different terrains.
What to Expect:
- Confidence with Hollow Surfaces: Watch as Christine guides Luna over a bridge to test how she feels about hollow surfaces, similar to what you might encounter on a trail ride.
- Practical Applications: Learn how to simulate these conditions at home using materials like marine ply, and understand the importance of ensuring the surface is safe and secure.
- Building Trust: See how Christine uses tools like a flag to guide and reassure Luna, ensuring she doesn’t lose confidence while navigating the bridge.
- Handling Emotional Responses: Christine explains the importance of recognizing and responding to emotional signs from your horse, such as pawing, and the need to allow the horse time to process and relax.
Benefits:
- Real-World Preparation: Prepare your horse for trail riding and other scenarios by practicing with varied and challenging surfaces.
- Safety First: Learn important safety measures, such as ensuring surfaces are non-slip and understanding when not to use certain materials with shod horses.
- Trust Building: Strengthen your horse’s trust in your guidance by carefully managing their introduction to new obstacles.
This episode offers practical insights into how to safely introduce and work with obstacles that test your horse’s confidence and trust in your leadership.
