In episode #4 of How Horses Communicate, Belinda Bolsenbroek focuses on understanding the significance of a horse looking away during training or difficult exercises. Belinda explains that when a horse looks away, it is not necessarily a sign of disinterest or avoidance. Instead, it is a polite indication in the horse's language that they need a moment to process.
Belinda highlights that this behaviour commonly occurs when working with the horse from the ground or during challenging exercises when taking a break. The horse's first instinct is to turn away, allowing time to process the sensations within its body. This process can take up to two minutes because horses naturally take longer to fully process and integrate these feelings throughout their entire body compared to humans.
While humans process information within seconds, horses require this extended period to fully understand what just happened. Belinda stresses the importance of appreciating and respecting the horse's need to look away during this processing time. Once the horse has processed and is ready to reestablish contact, it will naturally return and make contact with the handler, signalling that it is ready to move forward.
